Waling-waling

The concept for this artwork is to display that inspiration is everywhere. The flower utilized in the artwork is called the Waling-waling and is also called “The Queen of Philippine Orchids”. Due to its nature to live on treetops reaching for the sun, Filipinos believed that this is a symbol of our high ambitions. Additionally, the flower is so beautiful that it is worshipped by the native Bagobo people of Mindanao as a “Diwata”. It is currently facing threats of extinction due to damages to its natural habitat and being over-collected by local inhabitants. Humans tend to be drawn to beautiful things but not taking care of them means that they will eventually be lost forever.
